Dumnoen Saduak

Visiting the floating market at Dumnoen Saduak was one of my favorite experiences in Bangkok. It is located about 105km outside of Bangkok and took about 2 hours to get there. I traveled in a cab with one other woman who was staying in the same hostel.

In order to beat the traffic and an overwhelming number of locals and tourists that frequent the floating market, we left Bangkok at 5 am. By the time we arrived the market was just opening up. Since there were only two of us we waited about 20 minutes and found a Thai family that we could share a boat with. In total, we paid 400 baht for one hour on a boat without a motor. (100 baht each and the family paid 200)

While on the boat we were able to navigate the market floating past shops filled with a variety of goods. They ranged from little trinkets such as tiny wooden elephant and frog souvenirs to huge decorative canvas paintings and so much more. Anything that you might want or need there is a stand at the market selling it.

Perhaps my favorite part of the market experience was being able to buy fruits and food straight off of another boat while drifting along. If you saw something that you liked the women selling items from their boats would row over to you and prepare hot soups or rice dishes or cut-up fresh fruit for you on the spot. It was an experience unlike anything I was used to, an exciting and exhilarating way to spend a day relaxing and enjoying some of the best things Thailand has to offer.

Once our time was up on the boat we took some time to wander around the parts of the market that could only be visited on foot. These areas were filled with people (tourist and locals) food stands, clothing shops, art and so much more! The trip to the floating market is well worth getting up early to beat the crowds and the length of the ride. The food is amazing, the people are kind and the experience is one I will never forget.
