When your backs are against the wall, this could lead to recovery

After 60 days in two different rehabilitation centers, my family thought that my mom had finally found the path to sobriety. Ignorance was bliss. Five days later, my mom was so drunk that she could barely stand.

In no time, the cops were called on my family, my mom got into a car accident while intoxicated, and we were worse off than ever. Our backs were against the wall, and we exhausted all our options. We failed. My mom’s doctor gave her a year to live because of how severe her alcoholism was.

I had enough and moved out of my home. My dad and sister talked to my mom’s psychiatrist, and they gave them the advice to allow her to hit rock bottom. One of my sisters followed suit a couple of months later.

The last members of my family moved out of our home, leaving my mom alone. Every decision she made after that was 100% her own. She would be responsible for her recovery or death. By nothing short of a miracle, she chose the path to recovery. Her mindset shift changed everything.

Addiction is immensely more substantial than a habit, but there are many other habitual actions that addicts do every day they need to break.

There is comfort in habit. This exact quote is often used to motivate people to follow their dreams or conquer significant goals. Especially when our mental health is faltering, habits keep us from addressing the issues at hand.

My mom’s daily actions were comfortable. She’d wake up hungover unable to remember what damage she caused the night before. The day went one of two ways, her depression would take over, and she would sleep most of the day. We’d come home, and she’d apologize, trying her best to be an average mom. Her depression would lead her to drink a couple of pints of vodka most of the time. The drunken anger would ensue as soon as we got home.
