Why do we write

Why do we write? I think writing is a way to ensure a legacy that endures. We read words from those long past to give us a window into their minds.

That was pretentious. I write because I want you to know what I think about anything. I think writers are egomaniacs, constantly penning their opinions and thoughts as facts and deep insight. Using highfaluting (love this word!) words to conflate issues they know nothing about! This is not an attack on writers - I'm working really hard at becoming a better one myself - but it is a note to myself about the folly of believing that I write because of some noble ideals.

I write because I want to be heard. I write because I want to have a voice. I want people to read my words and attain a deep understanding of who I am.

That was a load of crap. I write because I saw a tweet that writing makes you a better thinker. I strongly believe writers write because they want to have a dedicated following of people waiting for the next episode of their newsletters or substack link. This doesn't mean there aren't folks who write because they have a difference of opinion so strong that it borders on the taboo. But I suspect these types of folks are few and far between, with the pretentious writer the most popular.

These words are for me, the part of myself that desires to write and have people throw flowers at the stage, the part that wants a dedicated following of core believers in the message I preach aka cult followers. These words are for the little boy with two friends - shy beyond belief - but dreaming of a future where he takes centre stage and the world recognises his talent. This is for the young adult who believes in the power of serendipity and everything working together for his good.

I write for the grown man worried deeply about the future and all it brings. The future will be whatever, but you can get a kickass story out of it, so write because your family might make some money out of the beauty and/or tragedy of your life.
