Lately I decided to be more measured in the way I interact with Kariya, our cat. Instead of expressing my love I pivoted to giving love when he wanted it only.
The changes included
These seemingly simple changes took a lot of will power on my end. After all it required a fundamental shift in how I came to understand love. Previously it was about what I extended to Kariya and feeling smug that I cared. Now it is paying attention to what he wants to receive from me!
Even more beautiful than my lesson in love is how his interaction with me has changed! The more space I give him the more he wants to cuddle with me. The more he seeks out the place I’m at. The number of times he nuzzles against my leg has almost doubled!!! He is more forgiving of my pranks.
