Reading and writing predate heraldry, which started in the 12th century. During the middle ages, heralds would gather people in town squares and relay news. People would read the information before there was someone to vocalize it.
Videos did not come into the picture until the 1900s. Literature has modern videos beat by 5000 years.
Moreover, people have been reading others’ experiences to improve their own for years. Elders pass down stories through generations,
teaching the youth some essential lessons.
The Bible is a prime example of such teachings. The good book teaches one must be selfless and love one another.
Odysseus’ Odyssey is another excellent example. Young boys learn to become a man through Telemachus’ coming of age.
Reading and self-improvement go hand in hand. There are many stories for people that will add value to their life. Literature has always been here to enrich others’ lives.
A good question to ask is how reading for self-improvement has survived so long?

Television was for sure going to do away with reading and writing. But no, videos are a good competitor, but books are still prevalent.
