The Wonder And Mystery Of Time

A Poem

That the light from stars that died billions of years ago
Are still reaching us today
This fact when first learned
Burst my understanding of my place in the universe
What it means to be alive
Forcing an examination of all that I “know”
To look anew at how I relate to everyone else
And my place in the history of existence
To examine what is meant when we talk about
Past-present-future
To question whether they are distinct and unconnected

So what is this mysterious thing we call “time”
Is it simply a unit of measurement
That has no separate existence except in relationship to other events
It happened then
Not now

Is there but one “Time” that encompasses
All that ever happened
Or will occur until infinity
Is every living entity that ever existed still alive in some form
Through the continued presence of the energy and matter
That gave rise to its creation
And will live on forever into the future

Do the echoes of our lives still reverberate in the universe
Like the light from the stars
So then are we all connected
All life
From the ‘big bang’ unto the end
Need there even be a final culmination
Wouldn’t the effects of a “big bust”
Be felt for many a billion years after its happening

For us children of the stars
Is it the whole story that we came from dust and will return to same
I believe that we are much more
That we have been infused with a spirit
That is the foundation of our being
Giving us a power beyond imagining
Making us Children of Light
Human stars
That are visible to the universe

What makes this all possible
That which we know as “Time”
Is all unified by the presence of a divinity
Within Whom all eternity exists
Need this necessarily be “the” answer
No
It is in the realm of the spiritual
Faith is required
But my mind and heart both lead me to this same conclusion
That this is so
All peoples and creatures throughout all time
Are bound together in one common journey
