WHEN LIFE HAPPENS

Derin woke up feeling drenched! She just couldn’t fathom why; with a wrinkled and frowned face, she tossed in bed as she tried to recollect the previous day occurrences. She was just starting to articulate the previous day rain when Dola banged on her door.

Derin and Dola lived basically as flatmates and were practically besties (best friends). The duo met at work before Dola switched jobs to an organization that valued its Creatives and although their workplaces were different they still shared a lot in common especially the house and of course food.

Dola who was becoming impatient at the door went ahead to call Derin's name in a loud voice before Derin gave the solemn and cold “come in” response.

Derin what took you so long Dola retorted, before realizing Derin was unprepared for work. An immediate sarcastic comment followed “but wait o madam is it that work is not hungrying you today abi village people are about to catch up with you because it's almost 6:30 am and you haven't even moved from your bed”

Derin who was still petrified gave Dola a loathing look and replied saying “Dola, I really don't know what's going on but I'm not ready for your shenanigans”!

“Wow, shenanigans just because I asked what's going on and you are running late for work”

Derin still wasn't having it so she dismissed Dola with a “will you keep quiet look” and subsequently responding in with the meanest thing that came to her mind

“Dola, wayyy before you got your trophy job I worked, I don't need you to drop me at work, you can go without me jeez”!

Dola felt so hurt but what she felt was deeper, is it possible that Derin who helped in getting this job is now jealous of her; Dola was transfixed and finally spoke “Derin, I honestly don't think I deserve that but you are not this stupid so please hand me over your toothpaste, cause mine is finished”

Dola went for the toothpaste anyways and exited Derin's room with a hiss; and amidst breath commented: “they've started drumming on her head”.

It was almost 7:15 am and Dola was having toast and hot tea for breakfast while Derin was yet to emerge from her room. Dola started to hope Derin wouldn't make them late today. They were to leave for work at 7:30 am so as to beat Lagos traffic, they really shouldn't take chances.

Dola finished the meal, got an apple from the fridge and started to munch when Derin finally came out of her room half-dressed. Dola did you pack my food? At this point, Dola had totally had enough of this but somehow still answered calmly, “you never asked me to help you with that but anyway let me get to it while you finish your makeup”.

By 7:38 pm they were exiting the house when Derin goes “I forgot my laptop bag” she started to scream at Dola to stop the car and started a quarrel “Dola you really should have reminded me, you remembered to take yours how self-centered.

Dola was mad at her and started to scream back but Derin just walked off to get the laptop bag. She came back and Dola drove off really pissed, tired and late on a Monday morning! Derin wasn't always like this but Dola just couldn't fathom what her problem was this morning, and she wasn't ready to know any longer.

Derin got to work right on time and her colleague, Jesse a fellow psychologist greeted her and tried to chat her up but she gave him another cold attitude but Jesse being Jesse, went “Derin are you depressed?” No! I'm not! Derin replied, then you must be on your period😎 the poor guy hurried away from the angered woman!

It was like a light bulb got turned on in her head, she had been so moody, having a series of mood swings and unexplainably depressed all day. Sigh! Jesse was right she completely forgot she was having her menstrual flow; poor Dola must have had a bad day due to her mood swings.

Derin started to think of how to make it up to her best friend, so she ordered Nigerian jollof, dodo and grilled chicken from the best vendor on I.G @XYZfoods and went home to search for a nice movie on Netflix but she didn’t realize when she slept off, her phone buzzed and it was a text message; it was10 pm and Dola wasn’t home, is there traffic? She searched Google map, nothing. She immediately assumed Dola had probably stayed out late to avoid her so she sluggishly got up and went to bed.

What she didn't know however was that her words had cut deep into Dola's heart whose life was currently being battled for by the doctors
