New Year Resolutions

The final days of year 2017 are here!!! If you ask me, these are the best days of the year!! So many things to look forward to.. Christmas, Carols, little family traditions (like watching ‘A Christmas Story’ on Christmas Day), short office days, a new year just around the corner with it’s own promises and challenges… last, but not the least, it’s that time for NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS!!!!

By now, you think we would wise up to the fact that we give up resolutions faster than we make them. But there’s something addictive about religiously making new year resolutions and forgetting them soon after!!! Seemingly well thought out and simple resolutions adopted on the 31st of December every year becomes ambitious, strenuous and nearly impossible tasks in a matter of day. I have tried specific resolutions to help me get motivated, and generic ones to avoid putting pressure on myself but so far nothing has worked. As if by magic, new year resolutions dissolve into a wisp of willowy smoke on a thunderstorm!! Come January 3rd week, resolutions are conveniently forgotten and even reminders from family members are met with a smug smirk.

One thing I’ve noticed though? Many of my resolutions have been last minute wishlists that are ‘nice to have’ features in the new year, thought upon while sitting on a church pew during Christmas/End of the year services. This year, I thought I would make some changes to New Year resolution process

With more people involved in the business of New Year resolutions, I’m hoping against hope that 2018 aspirations doesn’t suffer a quick and brutal death. While the below list is not final, I’m not anticipating a lot of changes to my new year resolutions. I have borrowed ideas and inspirations from my wife, colleagues, friends while making this list.

All things considered, I had a reasonable year 2017. My parents visited US and stayed with me for the first time in over 15 years. I had reasonable financial targets and met most of those targets. I moved to Mid West of US from East Coast, made new friends. I found a great Church home and I’m now part of a talented Choir. I do not know what 2018 holds for me, but I’m looking forward to it with a lot of enthusiasm. This feeling of hope extends to the matter of keeping up the New Year Resolutions.

There is a very real possibility come January first week, I won’t remember this blog and may struggle to keep up any of the 15 resolutions. Given past history, that outcome is extremely likely. But, this is the time of the impossible. Donald Trump is the President of the United States and Alabama elected a Democrat to the Senate. If that doesn’t give us motivation to wade into 2018 with the stated aim of keeping up impossible resolutions, nothing else will…

I look forward to blogging more frequently and keeping up my resolutions in 2018!!

Merry Christmas.

~Stanley
