To Crowd and To Campfire

I only needed to witness a blizzarding snowfall in New York City one time to not forget it. And I’ve only experienced it once. I chose to stop in my tracks for a couple minutes to really be present.

Inside a blustering crowd is a good place to feel like a small fish in a large pond and understand the fragile preciousness and scarcity of attention.

The majority of people are on the move with their attention directed someplace that isn’t yours.

Once I arrived at my destination of an office, it felt way more like a campfire.

Crowds seem to direct their attention together toward something rather than toward one another. This parallels to online spaces where everyone begins at the same place. It’s as if I’m stepping into the entrance of an airport when I open an internet browser and search a term that rarely hasn’t been searched by another person.

You’re much more likely to be on the same journey, contribute something specific, and thoughtfully see and hear the people around you at a campfire you find, or more likely, one you create yourself.

Which do you remember more?

That’s what’s scarce. With too much abundance, we have no choice but to draw the lines somewhere.
