Fight like a girl

Nobody ever tells you how easy it is to lose yourself. You can lose yourself like you lose your keys. They don’t tell you that you that you may give yourself away, on sale, to someone for the sake of a warm body in your bed. So that you can say you’re someone’s someone and wear it like a badge of honor on your chest.

They don’t tell you that those stares by strangers are out of pity and not respect.

Warsan Shire said when the men come, she’ll tell her daughters to set themselves on fire. I will tell my daughters to get ready for war. Because all you’re life…you’ll really have to fight. That shit isn’t just a line in a movie. Miss Sophia was giving us her testimony. Women always have to fight.

We had to fight to have a voice in the leaders of our country. We had (and still have) to fight for dominion of our bodies. We had to fight being owned — especially minority women. We have to fight off men who want to grab us by the..yeah you know…and be ready to stand accused of lying on those who prey on us. We are expected to take whatever is given to us, with a smile. Be adornments and accessories instead of commanders and valkyries. We are murdered for going to school. We are murdered at school. We are murdered for bringing shame on our families.

You can lose yourself in this world. In fact, it’s encouraged that you do. Give over your power to someone else. Preferably a man, who is better at talking about your uterus than you are. They don’t tell us because these are the secrets we were never supposed to find out. That we are, as Marianne Williamson said, powerful beyond measure.

They also don’t tell you that when you lose yourself or give yourself away, it’s hard to locate her again. But when you do, you hold on like hell to her, do you hear me? You hold on like hell. You press forward. YOU. FIGHT.
