The new me

COVID-19 has greatly impacted our lives. But in this lock down, I found the new me. Today, I am going to share my story which had an impact of this ongoing lock down. (Also, this is my first blog, so please be gentle)

The lock down started in mid- March and I was very determined on completing my syllabus before the end semester. But as the days went by, I just lost interest in doing anything rather than watching movies and web series. Everyday, I used to watch at least two movies and binge watch shows on Prime and Hotstar. (I didn’t have Netflix subscription back then). I just wasted a month doing nothing productive.

I had so many distractions including Instagram and Facebook, and on top of it I got my Netflix subscription which was crazy. I used binge watch shows like a crazy person just to keep up with the others who were watching new shows. I got so addicted that I was watching three shows simultaneously along with one/two movies daily. My whole sleeping schedule got wrecked and I used to stay up almost till 3 and the got up after 10 the next day. I stopped exercising, studying and even didn’t bother completing my submissions. It was just too much to handle.

As the days passed by, I realized that my end semesters are getting close so I started taking things seriously but I couldn’t get any motivation so I started building my LinkedIn profile by updating and making new connections. As I was increasing my connections, I realized that there are many people out there who have achieved so much in their college years and all I had is a decent pointer and nothing great to brag about. I have the theoretical knowledge but no practical implementations like doing internships.

It just hit me hard on realizing that I am lagging behind and that I need to keep up with the latest advancement. I started studying and doing online courses but my phone was my biggest distraction. So one day, I just decided to delete all the apps that caused distraction so that I could focus on my preparation for my semester. I deleted: Netflix, Amazon Prime, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger; all at once. It was difficult but I had to do it.

My motivation behind this drastic step was that, I thought about what I want in life. Do I need to watch TV shows or movies or posting on Instagram where no one cares about it; or to really dedicate my time in learning new skills which will help me to achieve my goals in life. It was ironic as I did this a day before the government announced that they will promote us without the exams.

I could have gone back to my previous lifestyle of all the distractions, but instead I stuck to what I had planned to do in the next few months. Till this date, I have not downloaded any app as mentioned above and I am really into learning new skills, frameworks and actively looking for internships. This one step has changed a lot in my life and from that day I found the real me who was lost in all these distractions in my life.

The things that I realized during this process is that, it is okay to not watch every show just to remain cool among your friends. There will be a time where you will get to do these things and there’s a lifetime to watch all the shows in your bucket list. Everyone has their own pace, but that doesn’t mean that you should not try anything. I strongly believe that whatever happens, happens for good and there is no right time to start your journey. I resumed my journey towards success. I was just lost somewhere in the middle and had to be back on track at sometime. Remember, addiction is difficult to deal with and it takes a lot of effort to get away from it. You just need to be strong and have a good will power and then you will succeed in life with flying colors.
