In the beginning Social Media was being utilized to connect with friends and family. Soon thereafter it was utilized to show off how popular you were with the many ‘friends’, ‘connections’, or ‘followers’ you had. Within no time we had ‘influencers’ on social media representing themselves or their business. Now we are using social media in a variety of different ways.

We are getting really good in creating content to share, whether that be experiences, how to…, educational, humor, advertisement, etc. there are millions of people and businesses actively engaged on a variety of social media sites. People have different interests that they follow or seek out, however, there is one thing in common that all people have. They like to feel that they are being heard and appreciated. We can use this to our advantage.

As a business when you are creating your social media team, you need to ensure that you have employees that take care of the content (creation and publishing), and employees that take care of your audience. You can have amazing content to publish on a daily basis and have a very large audience, but if you don’t take care of that said audience they can either turn on your or bash you publicly.

Social media is the next step for customer service, people don’t like calling and waiting for a call to be answered, or sending an email and hoping they get a response in a timely manner. Instead they will leave you a message on one of your social media channels and expect a response within 10 minutes to 4 hours.

What you do with these messages/postings/mentions is completely up to you. My suggestion to elevate your business is to respond as quickly as possible, connect with them, create loyal customers by making them feel appreciated, allowing them to express their opinion and get a response out of it. There will be some that are complaining and waiting to see what you will do. This is your opportunity to show to your entire audience that you care.

Facebook and Instagram allow you to strike up conversations with your audience, share their post on your feed, like their post, comment on their post (even when they just tagged you to tag you). On Twitter you can search for @ mentions and see who is ‘talking’ about or to you.
