How cutting meat out of your diet once a week can be beneficial to you and the environment.

I am sure that many of us are aware of declining state of the environment and our contribution to it. Most of our daily activities directly affect our surrounding environment. With this in mind, many people around the world have begun trying different initiatives in order to reduce their ecological footprint. We have seen the use of reusable bags, bottles, and straws to cut out plastics, and we have started recycling much of our plastic products. One global initiative in particular, known as Meatless Mondays has also helped us take a step in the right direction. By joining the Meatless Monday movement we can reduce the likelihood of developing chronic diseases and prevent further destruction to our environment.

If the average consumer decided to continue eating meat on a daily basis, except on Meatless Mondays they would only average at 72 pounds of meat per year, rather than 91 pounds. Therefore 5,705 pounds of carbon dioxide would be emitted a year. That is a decrease of almost a 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year.

This alternative could also save money on meals, reduce water usage, and slow down the rate of deforestation. Meat can be very expensive, especially compared to other produce like fruits and vegetables. This is because the process of growing livestock animals is not very cost effective. The industry requires a lot of land and resources to grow their products. With this land requirement comes the destruction of many natural ecosystems.
